Does that phrase even sound right? " Autumn in Los Angeles " I mean yea Los Angeles totally has an Autumn just like Hawaii has a Winter but does Los Angeles really have an Autumn? The cool crisp air. Fall foliage. Can you actually wear your Fall wear during the Autumn? Sure! You'll be incredibly warm though. But where in or near Los Angeles can you actually experience a real Autumn? Really soak in the Autumnal Equinox. Well I've done a bit of research for you but first I wanted to talk about what a real Autumn experience is to me.
So I lived New England and New York City for 4.5 years and I will tell you this. You will never experience a real Autumn till you go there.
• A New York Autumn •
Have you ever seen a sky shot of New York in Autumn?
Sitting inside a crowded noisy city where the mountains are made up of concrete and steel you will find Central Park. In a chaotic city the only trees you will find are in Central Park. My first Autumn there was incredible. To walk around in all day in the hustle and bustle of the city to find a quiet relaxing spot in the park makes you realize how beautiful of Autumn really is. Its overwhelming quite honestly. You walk miles and miles and miles all day long and then you walk into this park and feel and instant satisfaction. For me I felt indebted to nature. As humans we are robots of the everyday. I do not feel we take advantage of the beauty this planet has to offer. Living in New York City you forget about how beautiful the seasons are until you are in Central Park.
When I moved to New England it was winter time. So that coming Autumn was exciting for me. I looked forward to the New England charm. All the things that made Autumn in New England incredible. The evening backroad trips through miles and miles of trees that were a hundred different shades of Crimson, Burnt Amber and Copper.
Looking out the window and venturing into the woods during a New England Autumn is like being inside a painting and God is the artist.
One of our favorite spots was B.F. Clyde's Cider Mill. The delicious apple cider donuts made fresh everyday. We made it our weekly Friday morning adventure while they we're open for the season.
Have you ever watched Fantastic Mr. Fox? It was like tradition for us to watch it while we ate our donuts and sipped our cider. I mean after all Mr. Fox loses his own tail for stealing cider right? ;)
And don't forget that living in New England meant living near Vermont which meant that we could find the best local Maple syrup and candy around. Which meant we could make all the amazing maple taffy we wanted. Pouring hot maple syrup into snow using a popsicle stick turning the maple syrup onto the stick and wrapping it around. MMM!
This was just after our sweet Ivy-Rós was born which is coming up this month, her birthday! she is going be three years old. Time goes by too fast! But can you tell how amazing Autumn in New England really is?
So now we've been married almost 6 years and we are now living in Southern California till next July. I have been researching all the ways that I can lift mine and all the other Autumnal Equinox lovers in SoCal, spirits when we will endure another incredibly hot Autumn.
So first thing is first! Where is a girl to find some Fall Foliage around here?!!
Malibu Creek State Park
Arborteum in Arcadia
Palm Springs Tram
All incredibly beautiful and you are bound to see the beautiful colors of Fall there. I would be sure to check around the end of October/beginning of November.
Apple picking is a sure way to get in the mood for Fall.
I really love the feel of Cider Mills and although I haven't found anything like I did in New England its close for now. I have found a few Cider Mills here Southern California.
- Law's Apple Shed & Cider Mill in Oak Glen
- Woods Acres

- Parrish Pioneer Ranch
- Law's Oak Glen Coffee Shop
- Julian Cider Mill - Located in San Diego County
The season hasn't started but its so short here in Los Angeles it almost feels like it never started.
