About 4.5 months ago I gave birth to my third and final baby. Its been very bittersweet knowing this is my last little one. I must admit though I feel relieved for a few reasons. First that my third baby is a boy YAY! Secondly I will not have to be in labor ever again and thirdly this is the last time I will be working baby weight off. With each pregnancy it has always left me with quite a bit of weight to lose. My first weight loss journey began in 2011 after I had my first daughter. After I gave birth I weighed a whopping 195 lbs! I did start out on the heavier side at 160 but regardless of that I had a lot of weight to lose considering I am only 5'1. Growing up I was always on the heavy side. I was self conscious all the time. I remember being 15 when my weight started to climb the scale. Unfortunately at that time I didnt really have any knowledge of any kind whatsoever about what is healthy and what is not. I never portioned my food and I just ate till I felt sickly full. I also ate when I was bored but did not realize that until later on. In the back of my mind I always knew and would tell myself for some reason I have no idea that I would lose a lot of weight after I had kids. That whoever I marry would marry me for me. That is not something I would recommend doing now or ever. I truly did not know what being healthy truly was. In my mind I felt being healthy was starving myself which really was not the case but that really goes to show the lack of knowledge I had.
As time went on I started to research ways to lose weight. Not truly knowing there really was and is only one way to lose weight and keep it off. By the time I was 18 I tried every crash diet and weight loss pill out there. At one point I even went as far as getting on the HCG diet which was not for me and would not recommend it. All I heard was the first few days I could load up on tons of calories and then everything else went out the door. Little did I know that I would only get 24 hours into that diet to give up. What can I say! I love food! I still do! That was my last crash diet before literally giving in you could say and just lose weight the old fashioned way. A clean diet and daily exercise. It was there all along right in front of me but when I ever heard the word exercise or any word that meant my body would be jiggling in front of others I would instantly turn the other cheek. But in 2010 after going through an emotional first year of my marriage of moving 2000 miles away from the only place I knew to be home and my family I was ready and willing for a change that was when my journey began.
I supposed you can say that I have been living a " Paleo lifestyle " Since my weight loss journey began with the occasional cookie here and there but mainly I strive to eat CLEAN. I mean spinach in my egg whites and Ezekiel toast in the morning CLEAN. I felt great! The pounds melted off after I changed my lifestyle.
This was me about 2.5 months after the birth of my first daughter (Nov.2011) weighing in at 189 pounds. Also a month before I committed myself to a healthier lifestyle. Between my husband leaving for a few months on a submarine a week after our first daughter was born I was in survival mode. Survive and do whatever I had to do to raise a newborn baby alone in a place where I only knew a few people and was across the country from my family. I had no idea what was to come that next year. After christmas time my husband left again for a couple of months to get ready for deployment. YEP! You heard that Deployment. Brand new baby and he was already leaving again for 6 month deployment. He was gone a few months previous to leaving as well. After being use to him being gone more than being home my sweet baby and new lifestyle was my main focus.
When he left on deployment I went home to Salt Lake City, Utah and stayed there for the remainder of deployment. With the help of family to watch my sweet baby I was able to be mentally, emotionally and physically healthy overall. I began running everyday. Not long after realizing my love for running I would spend each evening that summer running. Some nights I would end up running 10 miles. I was in the best shape of my life!
I was 130 pounds and also the lowest weight that I had ever been. Little did I know that I would go on to do this whole process again after getting pregnant with my second baby. After my pregnancy with my second child I was still committed to my healthy lifestyle and endured through the process of gaining weight that had been lost previously for the wellbeing of my sweet baby.
There is so many emotions when I look at this image. How could I let myself get to that point but how far I had come. I know that Never again will I allow myself to be this unhealthy.
As I write this I am currently 4.5 month post partum with only 10 pounds to go till my pre-pregnancy weight. I have really focused on eating clean meals as well as lots of healthy fats because I am breastfeeding and I only want the best nutrients possible for my little guy. I still have a long way to go till I am in the shape I want to be but I have clear intentions of being back to that picture above in no time! Below is a list of activities i did and foods that I ate to help me lose weight.
- Insanity & Turbofire workouts
- Kayla Itsines workout guide
- Weight lifting
- All veggies. - If you are the kind of person who buys veggies with the intentions of eating them then stop! Just buy a veggie tray replace the dip with hummus.
- Fruit - I mainly eat berries, apples, bananas, watermelon
- I love eating sweet potatoes in the form of fries or even with just breakfast (note: real sweet potatoes are not orange. They are yellow. Yams are orange.)
- Eggs whites and spinach
- Nut butters! ALL THE NUT BUTTERS! - Almond and Cashew I occasionally eat Peanut butter but not normally.
- Quest Bars - These are not Paleo friendly however it silences my sweet tooth.
- Protein Shakes - Garden of Life raw cacao chocolate protein shakes are LIFE!
- Natural Delights Medajool Dates - These literally are natures candy! My favorite is coconut. YUM!
- Suja Juice - For a good while I was juicing for all my vitamins. It is a lot of work with 3 little ones so now I just take a normal vitamin.
- Trail Mixes - Almonds, Cashews, Raw Cacao Chocolate 85%, young coconut and the occasional pretzel
- I also love oatmeal again not paleo friendly but is low in sugar
- Cook in avocado oil
My goal when it comes to eating clean is to NOT count calories but truly eat Clean and watch my sugar intake. Sugar is a culprit of weight gain not fats! So many people are afraid of fats but in reality they do a lot of good when they healthy fats.
This is just a few things that I eat however I want to make it clear that I do not eat 100% paleo. I believe that all things are okay in moderation. Keyword " Moderation ". Life is to short to be taken too seriously. However your health should always be #1. I want to be around for my children until I am old and gray and I know that a healthy lifestyle is a promising direction.
